I Lost the Weight. So Where Was the Happiness?

We're told that losing weight will change everything. You'll look better. Feel better. Be more confident. Finally be happy.

But what happens when you lose the weight... and that happiness never shows up?

In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio, Yvette and Alyssa start by reacting to another round of internet videos, from the bizarre world of viral food content to a conversation about the massive industry built around weight loss.

But one comment takes the episode somewhere much more personal.

Julio opens up about his experience after The Biggest Loser and something he rarely talks about: after losing the weight, he struggled to recognize the person looking back at him in the mirror.

It took years for him to separate weight loss from happiness.

They talk about the cycle of losing and regaining weight, the psychological toll of dieting, our complicated relationship with food, and why reaching a number on the scale doesn't automatically fix how you feel about yourself.

Because maybe being thin doesn't have to be the goal.

Being healthy matters. Being able to live the life you want matters. And learning how to be happy in your own skin matters too.

Being Fat Isn't the Same as Promoting Obesity

What happens when simply existing in a bigger body gets interpreted as “promoting obesity”?

In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio is joined by Yvette and Alyssa for another round of reacting to body positivity videos and, more importantly, the comments underneath them.

This conversation gets personal quickly. Julio shares his own experience of having serious medical concerns blamed on his weight, including a neurofibroma on his spine that went overlooked for years. They talk about weight bias in healthcare, why obesity needs to be treated like a medical condition instead of a character flaw, and the difference an empathetic doctor can make.

Then they get into body positivity and one of the biggest arguments surrounding it, Is someone promoting obesity simply because they're comfortable existing publicly in a bigger body?

For Julio, there's a big difference between saying something unhealthy should be celebrated and saying, this is who I am, this is the body I live in, and I'm still going to live my life.

And, of course, they read the comments. Because sometimes the comments tell you a lot more about people than the video ever could.

Your Size Doesn't Decide Your Life

Life is going to hand you things you didn't ask for. A health scare, an accident, a setback, a bad hand. You can't always control what happens to you, but Julio believes you have a choice in what happens next.

In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio and Yvette talk about what it means to set the tone in your own life.

They get into the difference between allowing yourself to feel the hard stuff and staying stuck there, how one person's energy can affect an entire family, taking charge at work, confidence, leadership, and choosing to keep moving when life doesn't go according to plan.

And for people living in bigger bodies, that choice can sometimes feel even harder. You may walk into a room wondering if you'll fit, expecting the stare, or waiting for someone to judge you before they know anything about you.

Julio's message is simple, your size doesn't decide what you're capable of.

You can walk into the room. You can be the boss. You can stand up for yourself. You can take up space. And you can set the tone for how you want to live your life.

I Don't Obsess Over Food... I Obsess Over Eating

What if your relationship with food isn't really about the food?

In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio sits down with Yvette and shares a realization that hit him during therapy: he doesn't think he's ever unintentionally eaten anything in his life. He thinks about the meal, the preparation, how he's going to eat it, even the plate and utensils.

And that led to an even bigger realization, he doesn't obsess over food. He obsesses over eating.

Julio and Yvette unpack what intentional eating looks like, where it can actually be helpful, where it becomes exhausting, and why telling someone in a bigger body to simply think of "food as fuel" misses a much bigger conversation.

Because food can be fuel. It can also be something you genuinely enjoy. Both can be true.

Ultimately, this episode comes back to one word, awareness. Understanding how you eat, why you eat, and what food means to you might be more useful than blindly following another set of diet rules.

Watch the full episode and tell us in the comments, are you an intentional eater, or have you never really thought about it?

Why Do We Wait Until We're Dying to Start Living?

In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio is joined by Eve for a conversation about time, regret, forgiveness, and all the things we keep telling ourselves we'll do "someday."

After facing his own health scare and watching his father reach the end of a nearly 99-year life with things he still wished he'd done, Julio has a different perspective. We don't have as much time as we think we do.

And when you're living in a bigger body, it's especially easy to start putting life on hold. I'll take the trip when I lose weight. I'll do that when I'm healthier. I'll try it when I'm more confident.

But what if you stopped waiting?

Julio and Eve talk about forgiveness, taking chances, letting go of regret, making the choice to get back up when life knocks you down, and learning to enjoy your life exactly where you are right now.

Because you can make more money.

You can't make more time.

Watch the full episode, then tell us in the comments, what's something you've been putting off that you want to finally do?

What I Wish My Parents Had Said

How do you talk to someone you love about their weight without making them feel ashamed?

In this episode, Julio reflects on his own childhood, the conversations that stayed with him for decades, and how those experiences shaped the way he parents today. From silence to tough love, he explores why communication matters, why listening matters even more, and how a simple conversation can have a lasting impact.

This isn't an episode about dieting or telling people what they should do. It's about understanding, empathy, and creating a safe space for the people you care about to be honest about what they're going through.

If you're a parent, a family member, or someone who has ever struggled with these conversations, this episode is for you.

New episodes every Thursday.
