What changes when a weight-loss journey stops being about everybody else and finally becomes about you?
In Episode 26 of Big Man Big Problems, Julio continues his conversation with Mike, who has now lost more than 100 pounds. But this episode is less about the number and more about what made this attempt feel different from all the ones before it.
Mike talks about the years of dieting, losing weight, gaining it back, and eventually realizing that this time he had to make the decision for himself. Not for his wife. Not for his kids. Not because somebody told him he should.
The conversation gets more personal when Mike opens up about the coping mechanisms he wasn’t ready to face before, including food and tobacco, and why losing weight meant finding new ways to comfort himself when the things he had always leaned on were no longer helping him.
They also talk about one of the biggest fears that comes with losing a significant amount of weight, what if it comes back? Mike has lost weight before, and he knows how quickly progress can disappear. That fear is still there, but now he’s trying to redefine what success and failure actually mean instead of letting the scale make that decision for him.
Because sometimes progress isn’t another number dropping on the scale.
Sometimes it’s realizing you can get into a car seat you couldn’t fit into six months ago. Sometimes it’s moving another notch on your belt. Sometimes it’s simply being able to say, “If this is where I stopped today, I’d still be okay.”
Julio and Mike also get into the part of weight loss people rarely talk about: the time in between. The weeks and months when you’re still making decisions every day, second-guessing yourself, trying to stay consistent, and figuring out how to live while the change is still happening.
There isn’t one perfect plan that works for everybody.
There is your journey, your timing, and hopefully a point where you decide you’re doing it for yourself.

What happens when the way you see yourself doesn’t match the way everyone else sees you?
In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio finally brings another big man onto the podcast. His longtime friend Mike joins him for an unusually personal conversation about body image, size, shame, confidence, and the complicated ways bigger people can see themselves. Pasted markdown
Julio and Mike talk about the little things that can carry a lot more emotional weight than people realize: the scale, that one article of clothing you secretly use to judge your progress, photos you weren’t prepared to see, and those moments when the person in the mirror somehow looks completely different from the person in a picture. Pasted markdown
For Julio, that disconnect has often worked in the opposite direction people might expect. He can look in the mirror and feel good about himself, then see a photo or video and genuinely feel surprised by the person looking back at him. Mike shares similar experiences, including seeing wedding photos that suddenly changed how he saw himself. Pasted markdown
They also talk about something deeper: the armor bigger people can build around themselves.
Mike spent years living his life without letting his size visibly stop him. Julio explains how much he admired that, while also recognizing that confidence can sometimes double as protection. Mike eventually realized that the people who truly loved him were going to love him whether he weighed 575 pounds or something very different. Pasted markdown
Julio opens up about his own version of that armor too, and how much of his personality developed around wanting people to remember who he was before they remembered his size. Pasted markdown
And they get into one of the most frustrating parts of living in a larger body: everybody seems to have advice, but very few people actually understand what the experience feels like.
As Mike puts it, if you want to know how to lose weight, ask a fat person. Chances are, they’ve researched it, tried it, and thought about it more than you realize. Pasted markdown
This is Part 1 of Julio and Mike’s conversation.
Next week, they go deeper into Mike’s current weight-loss journey, what he’s experiencing emotionally, and what happens when the number on the scale starts changing but everything in your head doesn’t necessarily change with it. Pasted markdown

Sometimes a song is just a song. And sometimes one line hits you at exactly the right time and sticks with you for years.
In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio brings Yvette back for something a little lighter: comparing the songs they find most inspirational and the lyrics that have stayed with them. Pasted markdown
They get into everything from “The Climb” and “Let It Be” to “Unwritten,” “Man in the Mirror,” “Rise Up,” “This Is Me,” and a few musicals along the way. Some of the choices are funny, some get unexpectedly personal, and a few hit way harder than either of them expected.
Julio talks about why “Man in the Mirror” became especially meaningful as he was leaving for California to begin a life-changing chapter, and why the message of making the change yourself still sticks with him today. Pasted markdown
The conversation also takes a more personal turn when The Sound of Music brings up memories of Julio’s mom and why something he once loved has become difficult for him to watch since losing her. Pasted markdown
And of course, Julio ends with the song that may sum him up better than any other: “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Because life can be hard, messy, scary, and unfair, but happiness is still something worth choosing when you can. Pasted markdown
This one is lighter, funnier, a little nostalgic, and proof that Big Man Big Problems doesn’t always have to be heavy.

What if working out had less to do with the number on the scale and more to do with being able to live your life better?
In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio sits down with Wade from to talk about fitness, aging, strength, mobility, motivation, and why exercise should be about a lot more than just looking good.
They get into what men should actually be thinking about when they train, especially as they get older. Instead of only focusing on biceps, bench press, or how you look in the mirror, Wade talks about building a body that can still move well 10, 15, or 20 years from now.
Julio also opens up about his own training history, including his time on television, triathlon training, and how years of building core strength may still be helping him today as he deals with back issues from a neurofibroma.
They talk about why fitness is never one-size-fits-all, why it is never too late to start, and how simple goals like getting off the floor, moving without pain, or being able to pick up your kids can matter just as much as any number on a scale.
Wade also shares a few simple ways to start moving at home, including farmer’s holds, scaled wall sits, and elevated planks, with one major reminder: meet your body where it is instead of trying to prove something on day one.
Because at the end of the day, Julio’s message stays the same:
Health before the scale.
Feeling good before looking good.
And just getting started counts.

How many times have you talked yourself out of something before you really gave yourself a chance?
In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio talks about something he knows firsthand: giving up on yourself, living with doubt, and looking back at opportunities you wish you had handled differently.
He shares some of the chances he feels he let slip away, from West Point to acting and television, and why starting this podcast became something different. This time, he made a promise to himself that he was going to keep going.
Julio also tells the story of competing in a triathlon in San Francisco, getting hit by a wave in the middle of the bay, losing sight of the shore, and nearly giving up. Instead of trying to conquer the entire swim at once, he focused on ten strokes at a time.
That idea becomes the heart of the episode, you do not have to solve your entire life today. Sometimes you just need to make the next move.
Julio talks about focusing on what you can control, giving yourself some grace, learning from failure, and remembering that the people who seem to have everything together usually have years of setbacks behind the version you see today.
He also gets into self-doubt, regret, and why mistakes might be more useful when you stop treating them as things you wish you could erase and start treating them as lessons for what comes next.
You are probably going to doubt yourself. You are probably going to mess something up. You might even get knocked down a few times.
Just get back up one more time than you got knocked down.

Men will talk about work, sports, their kids, their cars... pretty much anything before admitting that something about their body just doesn't feel the way it used to.
In this episode of Big Man Big Problems, Julio visits Gameday Men's Health and sits down with Amy to have an honest conversation about men's health, aging, testosterone, energy, weight, sexual wellness and the things a lot of men were simply never taught how to talk about.
And Julio doesn't just ask the questions. He goes through the process himself.
They talk about what happens during an initial visit, including a body composition analysis, symptom questionnaire and lab work, and why having a place specifically focused on men's health can make some of these conversations a little easier.
They also get into some of the signs men may overlook, changes in energy, difficulty building muscle, poor sleep, brain fog and changes in libido. Most importantly, they talk about why experiencing changes as you age isn't something to be embarrassed about and why being honest with yourself and your healthcare provider matters.
For Julio, the bigger conversation isn't about trying to be 25 again. It's about healthspan, not just how long you live, but how healthy and active you're able to be while you're here.
